Sting first rose to fame as lead singer in the unforgettable legendary rock group The Police from the 1970s and 1980s before becoming a mega successful solo artist. The Police released the popular hits "Roxanne," "Can't Stand Losing You" and "Every Breath You Take." As a solo artist he hit the top of the charts with such singles as "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold."  This phenomenal Singer, songwriter, and actor, born Gordon Matthew on October 2, 1951, is from Wallsend, England. He earned his nickname from the black and yellow sweater he used to wear during his early days as a musician, he became "Sting".

While often classified as part of the new punk and new wave musical scenes, The Police had a sound that was hard to pin point, they filled many influences from jazz to progressive rock. The Police had a unique sound. The group continued to attract new fans with its second album Reggatta de Blanc (1979). Sting wrote the two biggest singles on the album-"Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon". The Police won their first Grammy Award in 1980 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

The Police next album helped their position as a leading rock act. Zenyatta Mondatta (1980) featured such hits as "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da." The group toured extensively around this time and managed to release another album the following year. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" from Ghost in the Machine (1981) that hit the top of the charts. The Police regrouped for one more studio album, 1983's Synchronicity. "Every Breath You Take" climbed to the top of the American and British charts. While many have viewed the song as romantic, it is actually a tale of obsessive love. After the tour to support this album ended in 1984, then Sting decided that the group should take a break.

Sting began his career as a solo artist, scoring a hit album with his first post-Police, The Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985). Sting then went on to release a string of very successful solo albums, including Nothing Like the Sun (1987), The Soul Cages (1991), Ten Summoner's Tales (1993), and Mercury Falling (1996). During Sting wrote and recorded many ranges of music, from haunting ballads to intriguing instrumental pieces and upbeat popular songs. His chart success with such singles as "Englishman in New York," "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," and "Fields of Gold."
